Miraculous Medal 7x5in

sold

This is an image of the Lebanese patron Saint, St. Charbel. I started work on this piece last week on his feast day July 24th. Having been born in Lebanon I have had a special devotion to Charbel since my childhood.

I have recently compiled drawings and sketches about Brian Keenan's captivity in Beirut which I made for a project in 2000 / 2002. The drawings and sketches can be found here on my Notebooks and Sketches archive. I hope you enjoy them.

Yellow Onion 5x5in

sold
This piece took me quiet a while to complete.I layered the paint so I could paint this
large onion 'from the inside out'. The result is a very textured playful surface. I couldn't help thinking about a Lucian Freud exhibition I went to last year. He painted his nude subjects using a thick impasto approach with similar muted colours.

This is one of many pink roses in bloom in my back garden. I enjoyed simplfiying the composition and shape. I used a self mixed green and dark earthly colours in the background.

Poppy 5x5in

Painting flowers is very challenging for me. They are so delicate. These poppies are growing down the road from my home in a neigbours front garden. They have got prickly stems and leaves. The scientific name for them is Argemone, mexicana.

Carrot 7x5in

Painted this organic carrot using natural light and from a distance of about 3ft from the canvas surface so as not to get caught up in detail and to try and capture 'essence'. Its a great way to work!

Mushrooms 7x5in

sold

Just like the way mushrooms appear from nowhere all of a sudden - using a rag and the back of the brush really laid the foundation for this piece. I love the earthy, unrefined, unsophisticated colours.

Chillies 7x5in

sold
Really had fun painting this pile of Chillies.I never imagined I would get so much enjoyment painting fruits and vegtables. - they are subjects I just thought would never interest me but I've been proved wrong again!

I like to treat the subjects as abstract as they are - form, colour and light.

You can take a look at how I am framing up these pieces in the 'Purchasing section' or at the bottom (start) of this blog.I uploaded two photos yesterday of finished framed pieces.
