Through the Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass - oil/panel - 7"x5" - sold

This is the last of five studies created during my recent trip to Barcelona.
The pieces were created late at night just before bed as the days were filled with endless site seeing, gallery visits, plates of Delicious Catalan Tapas and activities!

During the last couple of days blisters began to appear on my feet from the sheer mileage clocked up in this wonderful city.

Of course it was well worth every step!

Hope you like the above piece.

Delft Blue Bowl with Red Apple and Grapes

Delft Blue Bowl with Red Apple and Grapes - oil on canvas - 12"x12" - sold

Over the last few months I have begun to develop a more 'classical' approach to my still life painting.
That is, instead of one lone object being described, my chosen subjects have evolved into a more elaborate set up.
This progression is very exciting for me as I get to play around with large background shapes on a larger canvas and work in a rapid manner making the composition pleasing to myself.
After that I begin to concentrate on describing the essence of each of the varied objects - how light falls on them bringing different results.
That is essentially what I am painting - how light falls on an object whether it be the drapery, ceramic or organic and how I can describe that in paint.
With this piece I had great fun playing with the various tones and values within the shadow areas of the cloth.

Velasquez, Sorolla and Vermeer - I can't help thinking of them as I paint in this fashion.

Hope you like this piece.

Pear and Grapes

Pear and Grapes - oil on canvas - 16"x16" - sold

Started this piece a couple of weeks ago when the RTE film crew came to document my work at the studio I was keeping in Cill Rialaig.

They took some video of me working on it in it's initial stages but I never had a chance to finish it that night due to being so exhausted after all the days excitement.

Came home to Dublin and set up again on an old antique desk in my studio.
With this piece I worked to convey a sense of movement and balance through light, shadow and arrangement.

Hope you like it.

Yesterday marked my third painting session at the Royal Hibernian Academy.
Being in there is so energizing - will post new images of works made soon.

Satsumas

Satsumas - oil/panel - 7"x5"- sold

During my time in Cill Rialaig I concentrated mostly on larger still life pieces and landscape painting but in the evenings if I had the energy after a full days work in the studio I would create a quick study like this. It was nice to get something else made at the last minute before hitting the bed!

Today marks the last day of my show exhibition at the Grange Gallery which has run now for over a month. The response to the show has been really great. Thanks to all for your kind comments and support during the exhibition.

Anyone who has purchased work(s) from the show and has yet to pick the piece(s) up can contact me directly at info@richardhearns.com or can call into the gallery today between now and 6.30pm.

Many thanks.

Delft Bowl with Knife and Apple

Delft Bowl with Knife and Apple - oil/panel - 7"x5" - sold

Have just arrived in after the most exhilarating day painting in the RHA - Royal Hibernian Academy on Ely Place in Dublin City.

To my delight I was recently invited to join into the RHA life drawing sessions.

Some of Ireland's most prominent painters are in this group including James Hanley, Martin Gale and Mick O'Dea. It was just an amazing experience to be painting with them.
Can not wait to go back in the week after next.

I spent the day painting from life and have a near finished piece to show for it.

Over the next few days I will compose a new blog which will feature all finished figurative works I produce during these RHA sessions.

The morning light through my studio window gave this piece above a real focus, and the strong long shadows casted by each of the various objects, I felt, created really interesting negative shapes as I began to crop in on my subject.
Hope you like it.
